Otterbein: In what was considered possibly the fastest senate meeting in university history, the senate met Thursday to confirm bylaw changes and vote on the approval of the common book for the 2018 – 2019 academic year.
"The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead, is the first fiction novel to be selected by the common book committee in seven years. When presenting the book, director of the Center for Student Involvement, Colette Masterson, described it as a take on “Gulliver’s Travels” by Jonathon Swift. In Whitehead's novel, the female protagonist attempts to escape slavery by following a literal underground railroad.
Masterson said the committee chose the novel because the author is newer and esteemed, the novel is fiction, it's has recent popularity and can be used by multiple departments.
The common book convocation and visit is scheduled for Oct. 23 to 24, 2018.
