Otterbein tennis beats Malone, 8-1

In a long and sometimes strenuous match against the Malone University Pioneers the Otterbein Cardinals swung their way to a win. The men’s team was in top form Monday, out-performing their opponents for most of the sets.

The team scored big with an 8-1 win in the non-conference match against the Pioneers. Winning two of the three men’s doubles games, the team was off to a great start which would only get better as time went on.

Otterbein junior Kendall Coffman, who won his singles match, said “I never doubted that we were going to win. My strongest set would have to be my first set. I had a lot of good shots in the set and a strong lead.”

In the final hours of the match, Otterbein senior Ryan Shutt faced off against Youssef ElSonbaty. This grueling game started off with an hour-long set. At 6-6, the set was to be decided by a tiebreaker, which was won by Shutt. Shortly after the set ended, ElSonbaty limped around, as if injured. A short break was called as the trainer was summoned to examine his leg. Dusk began to fall and after a disagreement over a point, the game was taken inside to the Rike Center.

Shutt came out victorious winning the final set of the match 6-2.

Not only did the men’s tennis team outperform in today’s match against the Malone University Pioneers, but so did the women. The women’s team swept the court with the Pioneers handing them their rackets and sending them packing in an 8-1 win.

The match began with five women’s double’s games, all of which were won by Otterbein.

Standouts in the singles matches include Otterbein sophomore Sammi Kruger who dug deep to achieve a golden set against her opponent Kaley Kahoun.

When asked about how they felt about the match, Otterbein sophomores Adrien Leatherwood and Megan Locke said, “Once we won our doubles match, it was all uphill from there.”

Senior Julie Stroyne kept her eye on ball and outplayed her Malone opponent Asia Harris. After a slight squabble over a bad call, Stroyne was able to keep her head in the game and bring home the win.
