Journalism is changing. Well, it has changed.
When this news organization — formerly comprised of Otterbein360.com and the Tan & Cardinal newspaper — decided to print our final copy of the newspaper in spring 2013, we also made a decision to change how we reported on campus news.
The Tan & Cardinal newspaper was distributed throughout campus every Wednesday, and, until recently, that’s how Otterbein360 was updated. But the Internet doesn’t wait for print deadlines once a week — or in bigger organizations, nightly. The Internet is constantly changing, updating and refreshing. And so, we need to do the same. That means posting more frequently, using Twitter and Facebook and tailoring content to the web.
But what has changed the most is you, the audience.
One writer calls it The People Formerly Known as the Audience another, the former audience. Whatever the name, it is clear that the audience, the consumers of news, have far more power than ever before. Which also means that the audience demands more than ever before.
So we, as a news organization, need to rise to those demands. Otterbein360 needs to be accurate so you can trust us for campus news; we need to be timely so you can stay informed on time; and we need to be transparent so you know when, where, why and, most importantly, how we make the decision that we do.
We want to engage with you through social media. We want to provide what you want to read.
This Editor’s Blog will seek to engage, inform, explain and entertain you as a new form of news.
