Otterbein football gets second win over Baldwin Wallace

After a tough game last weekend, the Otterbein Cardinals football team won their first night game at home against the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, 19-7.

With the win Otterbein improves to 2-2 on the season while Baldwin Wallace falls to 2-2.

The first quarter saw both teams use up much of the clock as Otterbein and Baldwin Wallace only had two possessions during the quarter.

Otterbein would be first to put points on the board early in the second quarter as senior quarterback Ben Sizemore made a 5-yard touchdown run. However the Cardinals fumbled on the extra point attempt making the score 6-0.

Baldwin Wallace struck back on their very next possession as junior quarterback Michael Slack had a 21-yard touchdown run to take the lead, 7-6.

However, Otterbein would not go into halftime trailing as sophomore running back Drew Ervin scored on a 76-yard touchdown run late in the second to put the Cardinals up by six, 13-7.

Otterbein would score one final time at the end of the third to take a 19-7 lead and ultimately hang on to get the win.

Ervin led the team in rushing with 234 total yards, just 35 short of the school record for a single game, while senior wide receiver Steven Carpenter led all receivers with 85 total yards.

“Our offense played great,” Carpenter said. “We went back to a quick, rushing offense, and it really paid off.”

Even with this win, Otterbein committed 11 penalties for 101 yards.

“We need to work on the little things,” Carpenter said. “I mean we committed way too many penalties, and its stuff like that that we need to improve upon this week in practice.”

The Cardinals return to action next Saturday, Oct. 12, at Muskingum with kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
