Otterbein track training harder for season

Unlike many other sports, track and field includes many different events. From hurdles, relays, shot put and jumps, this sport encompasses and asks a lot of a team.

Dave Lehman, Otterbein’s head coach, is accompanied by six assistant coaches who specialize in different aspects of the sport and offer specific workouts which target each event.

Practice for the new track and field season has been vigorous in the offseason. From lifting to calisthenics, the Cards are being equipped to withstand the pressure.

“Workouts are now harder,” said Abbey Gray, junior hurdler and nursing major. “We started lifting early in the summer. We’ve been running a lot more this year and working on our endurance.”

This year’s team includes not only incoming freshman faces, but also experienced distance runners — who have just come out of a great season.

“We are so used to running 5Ks and 6Ks, and now we are running 800 meters and miles,” said Sara Stevenson, a junior nursing major.

Stevenson runs both mid and long-distance for the track team with her strong point being the 800-meter relays. Also a member of the cross country team and last year’s track team, Stevenson said she is looking forward to the outcome of the two teams meshing together.

“As a team, we have dinners together,” she said. “The girls team also does a secret sister gift exchange just before the conference.”

Both Stevenson and Gray said they are excited for what the new season has in store.

“We have a ton of freshman distance girls who have joined the team after having such a great cross country season,” Gray said. “(The season) is going to be super awesome.”
