BLOG: Student responds to Chocolate Stallion

After the whole Chocolate Stallion debacle here at Otterbein, I had something happen to me that really upset me. I was walking to my car from my fraternity house, and about 20 yards ahead was a female student walking in the same direction. When she noticed me behind her, I’m guessing she assumed that I was up to no good; she began running to her destination. She ran all the way to the end of the street before realizing that I had no intention of following her, or even acknowledging that she was there. Needless to say, this didn’t make me a happy camper.

I would love to believe that she just wanted to get in a late-night workout, but I’m not nearly that stupid. She was obviously afraid. The problem is, I did nothing to create this feeling of fear. Being a black man in a predominantly white area, I see similar assumptions of danger happen all too often, and quite frankly I am sick of it. Imagine if you made your judgments of everyone you’ve ever met from 20 yards away. I’d bet you would be wrong more times than not, and if you decided to voice those judgments you probably wouldn’t make many friends either.

To whoever you may have been, I just want you to know that running from every black man you see is completely unnecessary. It's not only unnecessary, but it's also blatantly racist. Just because the “Black Stallion” likes to sexually harass women, you shouldn’t assume that we will all do the same. I would enjoy nothing more than to be able to walk to my car without someone running from me. Maybe once you stop running, and catch your breath, we can have a conversation. Who knows, we may even become good enough friends to go for a run together.

And to you Mr. Chocolate Stallion, life as a black man in America comes with enough challenges. Please stop creating more of them for the rest of us with your idiocy and disrespect. Thanks bruh.
