Inside the Rike Center, tucked away in the southwest corner of the aging building, four full-time coaches and four graduate assistants work ten hour days in their offices. As the Otterbein football players are gearing up for exams and summer, the Cardinals coaching staff’s work is not nearly complete.
Alex Bayer played tight end at Bowling Green State University and had a couple stints in the National Football League. Now, he works with the football staff as a GA while serving as the teams’ tight ends coach. His spring and summer months are also spent breaking down practice film.
Graduate Assistants are tasked with breaking down the film of practice and making it available to the coaching staff. It is not a luxurious task, but a necessary one. The GA’s will spend two full seasons at Otterbein, while earning their degrees, and then look to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Dan Damico serves as the teams' offensive coordinator, a position he has held since 2014. Damico’s offense averaged 34.9 points per game last season, but will now have to replace major contributors for the 2018 season.
