Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor: The COMM 415 class would like to thank the staff of the Tan & Cardinal for helping with our "Just Vote" campaign. The goal of our campaign was to encourage more college students to participate in the election process. Our generation represents one-fourth of the electoral vote and continues to grow.

Cheaper Books to the Rescue

The average college student spends approximately $900 a year on textbooks. The estimated price for Otterbein students is even higher at $960, according to a page on the school's intranet. Luckily for students, new legislation passed by the House of Representatives last month will work to offset inflated textbook prices.

Senior Send-off

Women's basketball head coach Connie Richardson might feel like she's been riding the Millennium Force roller coaster. "Consistency is very crucial in this game and I didn't think some individuals were very consistent. Therefore, as a team, we weren't consistent," said the 17th-year head coach.

Favorite Four Bid Fond Farewell

With sports journalism comes the throwing aside of fan-hood. Impartiality is the name of the game. Choose no sides, give the facts - who, what, where, when and why the heck should anyone care - and go on your merry way. That's a little too straight-laced for me, and most of the time sports give us zero enjoyment unless we have a rooting interest.

On the Back Burner

This March marks the fifth anniversary of the invasion and declaration of war in Iraq. Coincidentally, this May, it will have been five years since President Bush declared, "Mission accomplished." But we remain in Iraq. In those early days, the war was the topic of discussion on every broadcast and in every newspaper.

Theatre Sings for their Supper

The BFA acting and musical theatre majors of the 2009 class got to wrap up the quarter with their own style. Last Saturday the students put on a winter cabaret. The show was a fundraiser for Cap and Dagger, Otterbein's student theatre organization. The ensemble included Emily Asbury, Jonelle Browne, Steve Czarnecki, Sarah Hiance, Matt Johnson, Claire Longest, Caitlin Morris, Kari Ringer, Cory Smith, Cesar Villavicencio and the emcee for the evening, A.

Seniors Say Goodbye

I've always had trouble saying goodbye. I'm that freak on the other end of your phone conversation who won't hang up until you've hung up first. I'm always waiting for that "click." If it doesn't happen, we're both stuck there in awkward limbo for what seems like eternity.

Students Pledge Allegiance

You may recognize Jill Birkinbine from one of your science classes. She is an allied health and health education major. She likes hockey and works at a pizza shop. She is a pet owner and trainer of four poodles who have won various honors at dog shows. She is a pretty typical college student... who is crazy about Hillary Clinton.

Kicked Out By Capital

An old sports adage says "it's very hard to beat a team three times in one season." How hard? Go ask the New England Patriots. The Otterbein women's basketball team also found out how exactly hard it is. In the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) tournament action last night the fourth seed Cardinals fell to archrival Capital University 72-66 at the Rike Center.

Senate Revels

College Senate met yesterday for the second time this quarter. The focal point of the evening was to celebrate Otterbein's recent feat. President C. Brent DeVore presented the prestigious Presidential Award for General Community Service to the senate. Otterbein College, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Colorado were the only three higher education institutions to be acknowledged by the White House for this distinction, according to DeVore.

Students Pledge Allegiance- Part 3

With many strong candidates, the upcoming election seems as tight as ever. But, in the eyes of junior public relations major Laura Norman, only one man stands above all: Illinois Senator Barack Obama. "I am excited about this election because it is time for a change in America," Norman said.

Super Seniors Close Out Careers

There are so many different techniques and sciences when it comes to sports. A pro golfer's hips shoot through inhumanly fast (Shakira tells us our hips don't lie, or maybe hers don't and everyone else's tell the truth...who knows). A baseball swing looks so effortless there's no way it would make a sphere of rawhide fly 400 feet (hold the steroids jokes.

According to his Web site, Paul has never voted to raise taxes or congressional pay, nor to increase the power of the executive branch.
