Academic Interest Day Put on Ice

Academic Interest Day (AID) was cancelled last weekend on account of the snowy weather and will not be rescheduled this year.

AID is a visitation day hosted by the college toward the end of winter quarter each year. It is exclusively for prospective students who have already been admitted to the college for the upcoming academic year.

According to Kristen Messenheimer, assistant director of admission and coordinator of the visitation day, 169 students were registered to attend the visitation day, with a group total of 466 people, including friends and family members of the prospective students.

Because AID is one of the largest field days at Otterbein, many students choose whether or not to attend Otterbein soon after their AID expereince.

"It's hard to say if this will play into affecting enrollment next year or not," said Messenheimer. "There are just so many factors."

Associate director of admission, Benjamin Shoemaker, agreed with Messenheimer, saying that it's too soon to tell if it will affect admissions.

Shoemaker said that they would love to be able to reschedule AID but because it is "a coordinated effort on all parts of the campus," it would be too hard to reschedule.

Faculty members, students, tour guides, campus organizations and staff are all involved in AID. According to director of admission, Cass Johnson, the 1st of April is when they start planning for the next year. "The problem is, we've run out of time," said Johnson about rescheduling the event.

Every student who was planning on attending the visitation day received a phone call from the Office of Admission, explaining the cancellation. Mass e-mails were also sent out and information regarding the cancellation was posted on the Web site.

About 14 students and their families who were traveling from out of state still showed up and the Office of Admission did its best to make sure they still had a valuable experience. t&c;
