Theatre Sings for their Supper

The BFA acting and musical theatre majors of the 2009 class got to wrap up the quarter with their own style. Last Saturday the students put on a winter cabaret. The show was a fundraiser for Cap and Dagger, Otterbein's student theatre organization.

The ensemble included Emily Asbury, Jonelle Browne, Steve Czarnecki, Sarah Hiance, Matt Johnson, Claire Longest, Caitlin Morris, Kari Ringer, Cory Smith, Cesar Villavicencio and the emcee for the evening, A.J. Smitrovich. Shelly Apelado and Joe House provided instrumental help for the performance.

"What made us decide to do a cabaret was simply a need to create. We had songs in our repertoire that we wanted to sing and [we] wanted to sing them together. Moreover, it was a chance for us to really put on a show by ourselves and to ultimately make theatre," said Smitrovich, junior acting major.

The cabaret included skits from different plays and musicals.

The cast performed their own versions of the acts while incorporating humorous scenes that kept the audience constantly laughing.

The students had been rehearsing for the cabaret since the beginning of winter quarter, and used whatever free time they had for practicing.

When asked why they decided not to involve the faculty, Smitrovich said, "The main reason we did it ourselves is so that we had more creative and artistic freedom with the project."

Some of the acts included "Prima Donna" from "The Phantom of the Opera," "La Vie Boheme" from "Rent," "Hear My Song" from "Songs for a New World," "A Stud and Babe" from "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," "Bend and Snap" from "Legally Blonde," "We are the Altar Boyz" from "Altar Boyz" and "Heart and Music" from "A New Brain."

A scene from "Madea" and a quick and hilarious version of "Romeo and Juliet" were also included in the show.

The performance kept the audience laughing and entertained.

The show gave the students a chance to add their own personal style and flair to their acting one more time before they graduate.

The show was a major success, and raised more than $1,000 for the theatre department. t&c;
