Cardinals ousted in tournament

The Cardinals played their final game of the year on May 9, losing to the Heidelberg Student Princes. Losing this game knocked them out of the OAC tournament and retires one of the best senior classes ever to take the field at Otterbein.

"It's really just a whole body shock for me knowing that my four years are over playing for Otterbein and I wish I could do it all over again," said senior pitcher Dan Remenowsky.

In game one, the Cardinals lost to number-two-seeded Marietta 5 2. The game started off looking like it was going to be an all-out battle, until Marietta opened up in the bottom of the second, earning two runs off of Remenowsky. Otterbein attempted to get back in the game earning one run in the eighth inning, but their efforts fell short, losing the first game in the OAC tournament 5 2. This was the final game Remenowsky pitched for the Cardinals and unfortunately it ended with a loss, making him 5 2 on the year. "I feel that as great of a team we had, we just never played up to our potential and it really sucks to know I'm never going get to play with these guys again," said Remenowsky.

Luckily, Otterbein had one more chance to make a run for the OAC championship, which they capitalized on, beating Mount Union 5 3. Determined not to lose a second game and have their season end, the Cardinals came out ready to play. Senior Pat Connor opened things up for the Cardinals hitting a double in the third inning, which eventually led to 3 0 lead. The Cardinals stayed on the offensive attack with junior Dan Lassak's home run in the fifth inning bringing the game to 5 3. Senior pitcher Doug Stevens earned the win for the Cardinals putting him at 5 2 for his final season at Otterbein. In game three Otterbein took on Heidelberg and the story was no different from regular season play when the Student Princes swept the Cardinals back in April. Heidelberg opened up play earning one run in the first inning to give them the lead.Otterbein answered quickly by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. The Cardinals continued their offensive attack earning one more run in the sixth inning bringing the game to 4 1 Otterbein. The Student Princes came out in the seventh and eighth inning earning four runs total, which put the game at 5 4. They continued to unleash on the Cardinals in the ninth earning four more runs, ending the game and Otterbein's season 9 4. "We made mistakes at the wrong time. That happens in baseball though, and it just happened to us at a wrong time," said sophomore Brian Hiscox. Otterbein finished the year with a record of 26 15 and 12 6 in the OAC. Even though they did not win the OAC championship, there were many positive things to come from this year. Seven players for the Cardinals earned all conference in the OAC. Five players were named to the first team, including senior catcher Aaron Hutchison, sophomore first baseman Brian Hiscox, senior outfielder Chris Kovanda, senior pitcher Dan Remenowsky and junior designated hitter Dan Lassak. Senior third baseman Brandon Mauck earned second all conference and senior shortstop Ben Titus earned honorable mention. Along with earning first team all conference, Remenowsky was also awarded the Kent Tekulve OAC pitcher of the year. This is the third year in a row that he has earned this award and he has been all conference an incredible four times. "It's cool to be recognized for all the hard work I've put in, but I just wish I could have done more to help the team win. I owe a lot to Coach Ewing and Hutch for aiding me in my success this year," said Remenowsky. t&c;
