Calling out Cardinal Nation

Before we start making column magic, I'd like to welcome all freshmen. I envy you. You get to start out your Otterbein career with a great year of sports. This is the year to end all years for Otterbein Sports. The potential for this year is endless. Never before, (at least in my three years prior) have potential greatness and fascinating story lines lined up like this. Fasten your seat belts kids, this year will be something. The football team has returned 50 lettermen and 23 seniors, bringing back nine starters on offense and 10 on defense. The team has tons of experience, great leadership and endless possibilities. The offense was second in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) behind juggernaut and overkill specialists Mount Union in scoring offense. The defense struggled last season giving up an average of 27 points a game. But it was also a very inexperienced team last year, and now this season they have a chance to redeem themselves. But what I'm looking forward to the most is October 25. A day where the storied college football rivalry takes place, Otterbein versus Capital. The game is at Capital and this rivalry gives new meaning to the idea of home field advantage. Since 2001, the home team be it Cap or Otterbein has lost once. What a better time to put a dent in that stat than this year? The Women's soccer team is undefeated this season and still looking strong. In the winter, Laura Roth and Women's basketball teams are ready to bring home an OAC title. The Men's basketball team will have its first season without Ross Banaszak. The team will have to find someone to fill his offensive and leadership roles. Co-Captain Dan Scheaf is back after missing all of last season with a knee injury. We'll soon see if his dive-on-the-floor-into-the-crowd-yes-I'm-trying-to-break-the-backboard-when-I-dunk style of play, will give the men's team the boost they need to fill Ross' void. With all of these great events on a silver platter for us, there is only one thing we can do. Show up. I'm calling out Cardinal Nation right now. Show up. I've spent the last three years covering every Otterbein sport and the one thing we are missing is a great student section. The football team plays Muskingum at 1:30 at Memorial Stadium. It's that big thing right in the middle of campus. Show Up. t&c;
