Improvements on Modern Warfare 3 impress reviewer

Every year since 2003 the world has received a new Call of Duty, but this year the world has received the Call of Duty with “Modern Warfare 3.”

Already setting sales records and receiving warm welcomes from gamers across the globe, “Modern Warfare 3” might be the shooter of the year.

The game handles the same as the previous game in the franchise, but with a few subtle changes and some new weaponry.

Single-player mode

When looking at where the Modern Warfare storyline has gone in the last four years, I was let down by “Modern Warfare 3.” Not to say that it’s a bad single player — it’s a lot of fun and challenging and exciting — but it’s just really short, as I managed to beat it in 4 hours, 32 minutes and 8 seconds.

You’ve got loads of chase scenes and a handful of stealth missions, and a couple times you get your hands on some heavy machines, like the AC-130 in a mission similar to the Blackbird one in “Black Ops.”

One of the things I found interesting and became pretty excited about was some pieces of old Call of Duty maps in the storyline. They were remade so they fit in. They were usually never more than one building, but I definitely saw the main building in the “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” map.

Multiplayer mode

I love this year’s multiplayer. I’ve heard a lot of the “Battlefield 3” fanboys say, “It’s not MW3, it’s MW2.5 and all they did was make 16 new maps.” Well, they’re right, but they also took out all the frustrating annoyances from MW2 that the community exploited that ruined what was otherwise a great game. The mechanics are flawless and the maps are their usual gray color.

As far as the maps, they are going to take some getting used to. Basically every map has two-four places to get to one small open area with tons of lines of sight, and it’s easy for a team to get absolutely demolished because there are just too many lanes to cover.

Generally, previous versions of the game had a balance issue that hurt the overall value of the game, and MW3 is no different. The PP-90 with rapid fire might just be overkill. I could also see the Type 95 becoming a problem because it’s a one-burst kill. The truth of the matter is we won’t know what will be overpowering until everyone has had significant time to play the game and to choose a favorite setup.

Spec Ops

Spec Ops mode is back again this year and it replaces the Zombies mode. Spec Ops is a set of additional missions that don’t fall within the storyline of single-player mode. There are a bunch of different types of missions, from sniper to steal to full waves of enemies. This mode is for those of you who want a more structured experience that isn’t found in the game’s multiplayer.
