Otterbein Football players head off for halftime, ready for the win against Wilmington.

Otterbein football wins at homecoming

It was a tale of two halves this homecoming as the Otterbein football team defeated the Wilmington Fighting Quakers, 30-14.

The two teams traded possessions back and forth at the beginning of the game including a failed fourth down conversion by Wilmington on their own 29-yard line.

Otterbein capitalized driving down the field and scoring on a 7-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ben Sizemore to senior wide receiver Steven Carpenter halfway through the first quarter, putting them up, 7-0.

The two teams went back and forth again as they went into the second quarter, before Otterbein fumbled on their own 38-yard line.

Wilmington capitalized on Otterbein’s mistake and tied the game, 7-7.

Both Otterbein and Wilmington scored again later in the second quarter, and the score was 14-14 at the half.

“At halftime I went in and said we’re not changing anything,” said head coach Tim Doup. “We had to turn it up a notch and I got on them at halftime, and they responded.”

As the second half began, a more energized Otterbein team came out, putting up 17 unanswered points over the course of the half.

The offense exploded, as Carpenter caught his second touchdown pass of the game, and sophomore running back Drew Ervin recorded the first touchdown run of his college career.

Junior kicker Alana Gaither also recorded the longest field goal of her college career in the second half, putting her 20-yard attempt straight through the uprights.

Although pleased with the win, Doup said he is already looking ahead to next weekend’s game at John Carroll University.

“We have to get a lot better,” Doup said. “They’re a good football team, and we have to get back and do the basic stuff right.”
