Your first year in college can be a bit scary. If you live close to Otterbein, it may not be as drastic of a change. However, there are plenty of people here who have moved from all over the country, so the first thing to remember is that you are not alone! As a graduating senior, I have some advice to share.

This year’s student commencement speaker is Clark Tiemen, a senior double majoring in public relations and music. His full name is Aaron Clark Tieman, but everyone calls him Clark. Tieman talked about the process of being chosen to speak at commencement along with what he has planned after graduation.

Zach Paugh, a junior BA theater major with a concentration in costume design and costume construction, is a drag queen. Paugh uses his costume design skills to construct costumes for his persona, Cici Pingpong, has ventured off of campus to compete in drag competitions.

Otterbein’s spring musical, “The Full Monty,” has been the talk of campus this semester for one reason: nudity. Otterbein actors Connor Allston and Kevin Thiel talk about their feelings toward being naked in front of an audience and what goes into making sure the audience doesn’t see too much.

What began as a hobby for an Otterbein professor is now a way to bring awareness to charities that support medical research. Jeffrey Vasiloff, adviser of Otterbein’s Pre-Health Honor Society and assistant professor of anatomy and physiology, is currently working to raise awareness for these charities by organizing a concert that will be at Otterbein.

Otterbein’s Department of Theatre and Dance will be performing “The Importance of Being Earnest”, a comedy and satire written by Oscar Wilde. Since the play is set in the Victorian Era of England, the actors are required to work harder than usual to get into character. 2014 marks the second year for Festival, Otterbein’s student-run theater showcase. Presented over the weekend of Feb.13, this year’s show is less than two weeks away. There are a variety of performances ready to be seen, including one-act plays, one full-length play, dance pieces and mime performances.

An elderly woman lies in her hospital bed. She knows it is time for her bath and is waiting for the nurse to come and assist her. The door opens, and in walks two young men, both nursing students. She knows they are here to help, but she is still not comfortable with male nurses assisting her with the task of bathing. So, she politely asks for a female nurse instead. One of those two men was Joe Lucas, a junior nursing major at Otterbein.

When thinking of the drag show, a few things come to mind: heels, makeup, dresses, dances and comments from some women, like, “Why does he have better legs than me?” However, the emergence of a new drag show hopes to broaden student perspectives of what drag encompasses.

Longboarding has become quite a popular activity at Otterbein lately. Within the past couple semesters, campus has seen a progressing trend. Seniors Chistan White, Jacob Keller, Josh Butler and Jacob Harshfield are among a few of the boarders around campus who enjoy the ease and comfort a sport like longboarding can bring.

Written by Jean-Paul Sartre, No Exit was performed by students at Otterbein for the weekend of Sept. 26-28.
