Joanne VanSant came to Otterbein in 1948 as an instructor of women's physical education. She was dean of women in 1964 and dean of students from 1964 to 1968. She retired in 1993 after 25 years as vice president of student affairs and dean of students. VanSant died in 2012.

Before Facebook, Cupid's Capers kept people updated about relationship statuses around campus. If someone gave Greek letters to another, that was what lavaliered meant. When someone was pinned, the man would give his sweetheart a pin, formalizing their relationship.
