In a unanimous vote, senate voted to pass the first part of the proposed changes to Otterbein’s governance system at its Nov. 19 meeting.
Senate passed Sections1-6 of the proposed changes, which included the division of senate into student, faculty, staff and administrator assemblies. The vote on the second part of the changes, Articles 7-10, will take place at the Feb. 4 senate meeting. Articles 7-10 define how senators are elected and placed on committees.
If the vote on Articles 7-10 does not pass, senate will remain the same and Student Senate cannot form by the end of the year as planned.
Articles 7-10 also include changes to the University Student Judicial process.
"The most dramatic change in my mind is this new student senate," Ludlum said. Ludlum said that the entire student life committee and all of its subcommittees, which include housing and food service, was moved to serve under student governance in articles 7-10. This will likely mean that student government will be able to pass issues related to student life without approval from senate.
In an earlier statement, Susan Millsap, who served as senate parliamentarian, said she thought it was likely that student government will pass.
