Icy sidewalks and dangerously low and cold temperatures are making it extremely difficult and dangerous for pedestrians to walk around campus.
As a commuter who uses public transportation around campus, my peers on campus have discussed how difficult it is to walk on the sidewalks around campus. Not only does it take double the time, but it’s also dangerous.
This was the most problematic issue for pedestrians due to the icy footpaths and the extraordinary levels of snow. Additionally, the snowplow operators didn’t shovel the sidewalks. It was very hard to walk on the sidewalk with the snow coming above our ankles, and being unable to see the sidewalk.
It is very important that these roads are cleared in a timely manner to ensure student safety and avoid any injuries. “As a commuter, I feel how Otterbein is handling the situation is quite negligent," said student Dale Williams. "I’ve seen many of my friends fall on the ice, and the parking lot is a mess. During the beginning of the snowstorm, Otterbein did nothing to plow the streets.”
Despite how much people are shoveling the snow with the tractors from the sidewalks, there is still ice remaining on the footpaths. This is causing it to become hazardous for pedestrians, because there is no guarantee they won’t slip and fall and get injured. This is a huge issue for many students.
With the rising temperatures coming, the ice will slowly start to melt and temporarily fix the issue. In the future, Otterbein needs to be able to better handle the ice for students who need to walk around campus and ensure their safety.
