Classroom shenanigans are still alive on campus with two playful students transforming their class time into a fine dining experience.
Boston Kobayashi, sophomore zoo conservation science and biology double major, and Eli Cassady, sophomore environmental science major, have created a new tradition this semester where they bring in a midday meal every other Friday into their BIO 2020-01: Ecology course.
This tradition started when Kobayashi saw a TikTok on his feed that inspired him to create a midday meal every Friday.
“There used to be a trend where people would bring all these crazy meals like a lobster dish or cake. I was like wait, I have never seen anyone do this at Otterbein, so I have to do this,” said Kobayashi.
He went to Cassady right away to ask him to do this with him.
“It’s definitely in both our personalities but especially Boston’s to do something like this,” said Cassady. “It’s the time of the day where I’m starting to get a little hungry anyway, so I thought it was a great idea, and I was excited for it.”
Kobayashi and Cassady met during the fall semester of their freshman year in CHEM 1410-1D: General Chemistry Lab and have been close friends ever since.
Their five-star meals take place during their ecology lecture, where they have done a charcuterie board, tea parties, even Valentine’s Day. They even made a spreadsheet of meals they want to do before the end of the semester.
Kobayashi and Cassady say their professor does not have an issue with it.
“He starts passing out papers to the class and we start thinking to ourselves it’s over. When he gets to the back he looks over at us and our charcuterie board, hands us the papers, smiles and walks back to the front,” said Cassady. “That was the point we thought we can keep doing this.”
The number one rule they follow is that they make sure what they bring in doesn’t interrupt the class, but they did say they have some fun ideas they want to do that will have to get approved by their professor first.
T&C contacted the professor for an interview but were not able to do it in time of the publication.
If Otterbein students are curious about what they might bring to class next, students' can follow Kobayashi’s Instagram account @bosty_frosty.
