It’s happened, Urban Meyer is the new head coach of the OSU football team. I’m not surprised by this at all. I mean the signs were all there. The fans chanted for his name, Fickell was losing games left and right, and Meyer is an OSU alum, what else do you need?

Meyer couldn’t have chosen a better time to be the OSU coach. Ohio State has a track record of getting a coach and holding onto them for ten to twenty years. Tressel was the coach for nearly ten years, before him it was Cooper for about ten as well. Before Cooper was Earl Bruce, who also coached for about a decade, and before him was Woody Hayes. If Meyer hadn’t taken this job, who knows how long he would be waiting for.

Now Meyer has mentioned that Fickell will be on his staff next year. Good choice. Fickell didn’t have the best season and some fans will admit that he was treated unfairly in the decision process of finding a new head coach. But I still give him credit for all he has done this year. He coached the first five games without his star players and then he made an executive decision to go with Braxton Miller as their starting quarterback. Fickell had an amazing first year for not having very much head coaching experience and with all of the allegations and off-the-field problems.

Braxton Miller on the other hand is said to have gained the most by this acquisition because of Meyer’s past quarterbacks being college greats. There was Josh Harris at Bowling Green, Alex Smith at Utah, and the Florida QBs, Leak, Tebow, and Brantley. All of those players have had some amazing accomplishments and two are high profile quarterbacks in the NFL. It is certainly beneficial to Miller, who is being compared to Chris Leak and is mentioned as Meyer’s type of QB. With Meyer’s style of coaching and using the spread offense, Braxton Miller should fit right in.

So after all that Meyer clearly has some high expectations, probably more than Tressel. I mean supposedly he’s supposed to be the savior and lead the Bucks to a few BCS titles. He’s supposed to beat Michigan every year and win the Big Ten Championship since they are weaker than the SEC. I don’t know if all that will come to fruition but one thing is clear. OSU has arguably the best coach in the NCAA which can only bring great things. Good luck coach Meyer.
