This Saturday will be the annual Heisman trophy presentation. The five candidates have been selected to go to New York and be a part of the action.

There is Robert Griffen III, Trent Richardson, Andrew Luck, Montee Ball, and Tyrann Mathieu. Griffen and Luck are in good company because out of the last 10 winners, 9 have been quarterbacks. Griffen has passed for 3,998 yards, two shy of 4,000. He also has 36 TDs to 6 INTs and a 72.4 completion percentage. Luck on the other hand has passed for 3,170 yards, 35 TDs, and 9 INTs. He also had a 70 completion percentage.

Richardson and Ball are the running backs and both of them are just beasts. Richardson had 1583 yards, half of which were gained after he broke his first tackle. He also had 20 rushing TDs and 3 receiving TDs. Ball had more rushing yards, 1,759, and touchdowns, 32, than Richardson. He also had 6 receiving TDs as well.

The final candidate is Tyrann Mathieu, the only defensive player at the ceremony. He had two interceptions, 71 tackles, and five forced fumbles but that’s not the reason he’ll be there. Mathieu is at the ceremony because he had scored a touchdown on four punt returns this season. I think it’s great when a defensive player is a Heisman candidate because it’s always about the quarterback, running back, or receiver.

I think that Trent Richardson wins the trophy when it’s all said and done. Sure he might have worse stats than Montee Ball but he gained over 700 yards after breaking his first tackle. I once saw him against Ole Miss and carry about seven tacklers five yards before being taken down. The guy is absolutely amazing and his team is going to the National Championship which always factors into the voting. He’s going to be something special in the NFL.
