Otterbein's Homecoming weekend kicks off today

Otterbein’s Homecoming organizers have made a new addition to the festivities this year.

Starting this year, with the Department of Communication, a different academic department will be featured each year. The idea of the showcase is to have alumni share their career paths and to have students show what they are doing now. The Department of Nursing is scheduled for next year’s showcase.

The decision to showcase an academic department each year is an effort to “find additional ways to engage alumni in homecoming events,” said Director of the Center for Career and Professional Development, Ryan Brechbill.

According to Kara Anderson, director of alumni engagement in the office of Alumni Relations, there was also much interest from the alumni to have an affinity reunion, an opportunity to catch up with former professors. Alumni will also be exposed to a more recent addition to the campus: the Art and Communication Building.

Throughout the day, alumni will speak to 10 communication classes. Then, the showcase will continue in the lobby of the communications side of the building with student organization booths. The alumni will be able to see what activities each of the organizations is doing and awards they have won.

“From 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. there will be an opportunity for alumni to go up on air for the WOBN marathon or be a part of the (OtterbeinTV) Remember When homecoming special,” said Kahla Johnson, senior broadcasting major.

Immediately following, there will be an informal networking event at Jimmy V’s in Uptown Westerville. “The event is for students to network with the alumni who are great resources for internships,” said Anderson.
