Otterbein lacrosse supports Wheeling Jesuit player

Last night, students of Wheeling Jesuit in Wheeling, W.Va. held a vigil for fellow student and athlete Kevin Figaniak.

The 21-year-old senior business major was attacked leaving a bar in Wheeling with a friend this past weekend. Figaniak was admitted to a hospital after suffering severe head trauma. He was later pronounced dead. Figaniak was a member of the Wheeling Jesuit lacrosse team as well as the club hockey team.

After hearing the news, the Otterbein men’s lacrosse team began to sell t-shirts to help raise money in memory of Figaniak.

“We have ordered over 250 shirts already and may have to order more,” head coach Colin Hartnett said. The team intends to wear the shooting shirts, also known as warm ups, during their fall scrimmage in Cincinnati on Oct. 6. The shirts have the initials “KMF” on the sleeve that will be visible on the Cardinals as they play.

“In addition to Kevin being a fellow college lacrosse player, he was also a teammate and close personal friend of our new graduate assistant coach, Josh Lambert,” Hartnett said. “Kevin also recently played on a summer lacrosse team with several of our current players. We felt moved to show support and we thought this was a great way to honor him and donate money.”

Students can ask a lacrosse player about how to order a shirt. For further information on helping the Kevin Figaniak Memorial Fund, contact Hartnett.
