Otterbein Greek Week this year came with new event and new direction

Trivia night installed to aid smaller chapters

Greek Week 2015 came to a close last Friday night after a week long celebration by the student demographic said to make up about 30% of the campus say officials from the Greek governing bodies, the Inter-fraternal Council (IFC) and the Panhellenic Council.

Fraternity Phi Delta Theta (Phi Delt), and sorority Sigma Alpha Tau (Owls) emerged victorious from the competition, normally categorized by over-the-top, public displays of chapter enthusiasm. But, unlike previous years, this Greek Week boasted some significant changes.

Instead of the normal day to day line-up featuring sports competitions on both Tuesday and Thursday, men and women both competed in sports on Tuesday evening, and Thursday hosted Trivia Night, an event new to the competition.

Current IFC Social Chairman Adam Crider said the changes were designed to shift the whole atmosphere of Greek Week.

“We noticed that especially with the smaller chapters, they struggled to either field teams or to compete [in sports]. So we decided that it would be a lot more fair to try and include an event that was able to encompass everyone equally,” he said, referring to the installation of the trivia night.

Crider and his counterpart on the Panhellenic Council, Anne Manley, also decided to reduce the number of sports being played this year by fraternities and sororities from two each to just one.

“...people would be here for six, or possibly even seven hours, and that’s just not something that we wanted to do.” Crider said about this additional change. “We just wanted to get sports taken care of all in one swoop… and really move away from the significance we’ve had in sports in past years.”

Trivia night included a variety of questions on topics spanning from general trivia to questions related to Otterbein and Greek Life here at the university. This year's sports were volleyball for the men and kickball for the women.

“There’s really not a lot of emphasis on sports this year and I hope that’s the way it goes from here on.” said Crider.
