Otterbein Women's Lacrosse falls to Mount Union

The Otterbein women’s lacrosse team lost to Mount Union on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 17-5.

Coming into the game the team knew that they were going to have a tough contest. Mount Union entered Saturday with an unblemished 11-0 record, and ranked number 20 in the latest Division III Top 25 poll.

“Entering the game we thought we could win,” said senior Rebecca Carter. “However, we knew it was going to be tough and that we’d have to fight for a win. It wasn’t going to be easy.”

Mount Union got the scoring started early, with a goal just 39 seconds into the game by junior Katherine Doraty. Mount Union, the defending OAC champions, didn’t look back from there, scoring the next five goals before senior Tory Blatt got the Cards on the board at the 6:09 mark in the first half. Mount Union tallied three more goals to take a 9-1 lead into halftime.

Otterbein played better in the second half, only allowing one Mount Union goal through the first 13 minutes and getting goals from Blatt and sophomore Katy Williams to bring the score to 10-3. Mount Union went on another run, however, scoring seven straight goals to clinch the win. Otterbein added two late goals to arrive at the 17-5 final.

Going forward, Carter said the Cards will need to improve their offense in order to play better in the OAC.

“We need to work on settling the ball on offense, as well as staying calm when our opponent applies defensive pressure.”

With the loss, Otterbein dropped to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in OAC play. The next game is scheduled for Wednesday April 15th at home against Capital. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
