Student Senators Sworn in; Senate President Announces First Initiative

35 student senators and four student senate officers were sworn into office as members of the first student senate of the new representative model at an inauguration ceremony on April 1.

As part of the oath, students swore to act in the best interests of the students that they were elected to represent and uphold the student code of conduct. Student Senate includes senators representing differing student groups and departments.

Carrie Coisman, the student president, thanked the new senate adviser Collette Masterson, Vice President Connor Dunn and her support system.

Coisman announced an initiative by student senate to support a partnership with the Maria Tiberi foundation. The Maria Tiberi foundation, created by Otterbein alumnus and 10tv sports broadcaster Dom Tiberi, promotes awareness about distracted driving and awards scholarships.

“It’s very exciting to see this historic moment come to fruition but also more importantly, to see the student voice and the responsibility they get to have sooner,” Masterson said.

A new student government separate from the university senate was approved by senate as a way of increasing representation.

Elections for senators were held on March 13. Carrie Coisman was selected as president, Conner Dunn as vice president, Michelle Moore as treasurer and Kelsey Woodard as Secretary.
