Otterbein Theatre's upcoming production has much ado about Shakespeare

If you're looking for a bit of classical Shakespeare with a twist, look no further than Otterbein Theatre Department's next production of one of the Bard's famous works.

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's most well-known comedies. Two sets of lovers take center stage and while both pairs love each other dearly, one pair refuses to admit it to each other. This refusal makes for a wild ride of matchmaking, witty banter and gossip.

Kayla Walsh, a senior BFA musical theatre major, said one of the major themes of this play is the problems that arise from gossip. "We can interpret someone's entire life based on what this random person said about them. It's easy to gossip and easy to gossip badly and get information wrong," she said.

Walsh said she loves acting out Shakespeare's works because the playwright gives you everything to work with already.

"All it takes is you trusting the text," Walsh said. "It's just a matter of you putting your voice to a specific character in the show."

While the play will contain the original Shakespearean text, the set, clothing and props feature a modern spin that audiences will recognize. Characters use cell phones, wear modern clothing and some of the props contain various pieces of technology.

Part of the reason for the modern spin is to truly connect with the audience and reflect the show's themes in our modern world. But Walsh attests that Shakespeare's themes are timeless nonetheless.

"These overall concepts and ideas never change. We all want love. We all want a strong support system. We all want family. When it comes to having our dignity and our name questioned, who we really are as people truly comes out," she said.

The show opens Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Campus Center. Performances are on Oct. 23-24 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 30-31 at 8 p.m.
