Starving Artists President Addalie Bolyard takes notes at the group's Thursday meeting.

Otterbein's Starving Artists organization works to increase membership

One of Otterbein University’s student-run organizations, Starving Artists, is making changes to appeal to more of the campus community.

Starving Artists encourages the education and expression of art. The organization visits art galleries and local elementary schools to help students gain leadership skills by hosting art workshops. However, Starving Artists is not well known on main campus.

According to senior art major Addalie Bolyard, president of Starving Artists, the group has a hard time expanding its membership. The meeting area is in the Art and Communication Building, and many students are not willing to make the walk for the meetings at 7:30 p.m. Still, Bolyard said Starving Artists is making an effort to expand to main campus this year.

To improve the organization and become more known among Otterbein students, Bolyard is considering students who have different majors.

“You can be a part of the group even if you are a bio major, or whatever major you are,” Bolyard said.

Treasurer John Dickson, a senior art major with the same concentration as Bolyard's, said Starving Artists appeals to the many majors that are associated with art. Dickson said the organization has a long way to go before they become a large group on campus.

“Starving Artists is still growing and bringing together all creative majors such as art, English, music and theater,” Dickson said.

Starving Artists was one of the few recognized groups on campus that had an interactive booth during Otterbein's First Friday Fair. They joined the fair this year in an attempt to reach out to students who do not have classes at the Art and Communication Building.

They plan on placing fliers for the event around campus to reach out to more students.
