Otterbein women's basketball splits the weekend in OAC play

Good defense and a heartbreaking loss lead to a split week of conference play.

Otterbein women’s basketball split a week of OAC games, beating Wilmington, and losing a heartbreaker to Mount Union.

The Cardinals came out of the gate hot Wednesday night, taking a 12-4 lead early on in the first quarter. The Quakers would not go down without a fight, stringing together a 12-0 run before the quarter ended.

Up by four points to start the half, Otterbein would struggle in the third quarter, but a poor shooting effort by Wilmington left the Quakers just 7-29 from three point range for the game, and the Cardinals left victorious 77-65.

Otterbein faced a last-second loss to Mount Union Saturday night after dropping the game within the final seconds.

Otterbein found themselves down early on after a fast 10-3 run by Mount Union, but a slow second quarter opened up the game for Otterbein to take the lead before halftime.

The two teams would trade back and forth, trading the lead until the final minutes.

Down just two points with 4.4 seconds left, the Cardinals were called for a foul while in double bonus. Mount Union made just the first, and after a missed second, junior Cardinal Abby Zerkle missed a three-pointer to tie it as time expired.

Senior forward Abbie Scholz had a third double-double of the season against Wilmington, dropping 17 points and adding 16 rebounds. Zerkle scored a combined 29 points for the week and went 9-10 from the free throw line.

With a conference record of 6-8 and overall record of 11-10, Otterbein looks to add some wins with a week on the road. Otterbein plays Ohio Northern Wednesday and Muskingum on Saturday. Both games are at 7 p.m.
