Campus America visits Otterbein on first day of class

Campus America, a ministry dedicated to preaching the gospel around the country, visited the Otterbein campus. The nonprofit was on campus from 6-8:30 p.m. outside the campus center.

The group from the organization consisted of three volunteers and the president Tom Short. Short said that traveling to college campuses is to, “Challenge ideas we believe to be false and present a better way that we believe is God's way.”

Banners were standing to show the main issues the group was promoting.

One banner stated that everyone should see Jesus as "The Truth."

Some of the banners contained a pro-life message, and another portrayed the belief that being gay is a sin and pride should not be celebrated.

Short’s message is that being gay is, “a sin in our culture celebrated and promoted and dare I say kind of shoved down the throat of any student on a campus.”

While Short comments that the LGBTQ+ community can be overbearing, some students share that same sentiment about Campus America.

Two first-year theater students, finishing their first day of classes, commented on the group.

“It’s weird to walk out of my house and see that…it’s not okay," said Kathrine Quinn. “It’s not what we stand for and it’s not what I want to see on a college campus.”

Tommy Bilczo shared his perspective as a practicing Catholic who says the ministry's messages represent God’s hate and do not acknowledge the basic dignity everyone deserves.

“I think if they wanted to actually make change they should engage in conversation instead of just holding up broad and polarizing posters,” Bilczo said.

Several students believed the group was the organization Created Equal because of the returning visits from the latter and the shared pro-life messages.
