Otterbein's women's basketball team employs the use of male practice players

This is the first year that Otterbein's women's basketball team has employed the use of male practice players during their workouts.

This has become a common concept in women's basketball. Using male practice players allows for basketball teams to recreate elite players they could match up against during their season.

“We go to their practice, and usually their coach gives us their scouting report, and we act out who they're going to play that week, whether it's a shooting team or a team that drives hard, and our goal is to just give the best look possible to prepare them for the game in the best way we can,” said Junior communications major Jordan Ermalovich .

Male practice players are becoming more popular due to all the benefits that they bring.

“Having boys on our practice squad is really beneficial for us. They play faster and more physically, so it pushes us to do the same. Practicing against tough competition allows us to improve our skills and help with our confidence,” said Junior guard Abby Rawlings .

There are many reasons that someone would be a male practice player for the women's basketball team.

“I participate because I love basketball, but also because I want to try to help them and give them the best opportunity they have to go out there and be great. It's really great to see them succeeding,” said Ermalovich.

The practice players get the opportunity to play with talented players and continue their love for the sport. NCAA regulations require that you lose a year of basketball eligibility; specifically, this does not change your eligibility for other sports.

The women's team is back in action on Feb. 18, against Ohio Northern University.
