On Feb. 2, a water main on campus broke. This makes it the second time we have lost water on campus due to a water main break. Overall, there have been 60 water breaks around Columbus.
The water main break placed Towers and Roush under a boil order which is when water pressure is below 20 psi and bacteria could get into the water. Once the water main break was fixed on Feb. 2, the city still had to test the water to make sure it could be safely consumed before turning on the water valves Feb. 3 at noon.
The water being turned off severely inconveniences students like Saleena Saboor who has had surgery on her knee and finds it difficult to walk. Saboor often drives to class and parks in the handicap spaces to not walk far, saying, “I only ever come to Roush because my classes are here, and the bathrooms here it's easy for me to access, and there's usually no handicap parking spaces over at the library or anywhere else.” Saboor also says, “I don't know what to do about it. I'm just stuck in here. I'll just have to wait. And it really hurts to walk.”
This year, there has been an uptick in water main break issues. City leaders told NBC4, "this was an unprecedented storm and it’s led to some of the most water main breaks they’ve seen."
Otterbein sent out a notice that facilities has shut off water to the Art & Communications building Feb. 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for maintenance.
